Company History

The Maliban journey began in the early twentieth century. A young man from the south of Ceylon, as the country was then known, came to Colombo in search of better opportunities. Angulugaha Gamage Hinnyappuhamy started a simple tea kiosk on First Cross Street in Colombo. His tireless efforts were successful, and in 1935 he opened the Maliban Hotel at 62 Maliban Street in Pettah. Soon, he was joined by his brothers, A. G. Wickramapala and A. G. Jinadasa, to manage the fast-growing business.

With the success of the hotel, Hinnyappuhamy expanded his ventures by starting his own artisan bakery in Kotahena. The products, known for their superior quality and taste, increased in demand. Soon, demand exceeded supply. A decision was made to introduce a mechanized manufacturing process, and in August 1954, the country’s first mechanized biscuit manufacturing facility began operations. Over the next few years, the unique taste of Maliban biscuits won the appreciation of confectionery consumers across the country.
